Disclaimer and Safety at Sea

No matter how sophisticated a navigation software may be, navigating on water carries inherent risks for the vessel, crew and environment. AvNav is a powerful tool to assist you, but under no circumstances does it replace good seamanship, the skipper's sound judgment, and carrying official nautical charts. Please read the following principles carefully before using AvNav on board.

  • Use of the software is always at your own risk. AvNav is provided as free software without warranty of any kind. Neither the developer nor other contributors assume any liability for direct or indirect damages that could result from outages, malfunctions or incorrect calculations.

  • It is important to understand that AvNav is not an approved Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) under SOLAS regulations. The charts, GPS positions, AIS data, and depth readings displayed may be incorrect due to hardware failures, transmission delays, or inaccurate chart material. Official paper charts for the navigated area as well as traditional navigation instruments must therefore always be on board and in use.

  • Electronic systems are naturally prone to failure in harsh marine environments. Water, heat, corroded cables, or a sudden drop in voltage in the onboard electrical system can lead to an immediate failure of the entire system. Therefore, never rely on a single electronic source of information. Visual observation of your surroundings, traditional dead reckoning, and monitoring marine radio always take priority.

  • Ultimately, the skipper alone bears full responsibility for the safety of the vessel at all times. Warning features in AvNav, such as AIS collision alarms or the anchor watch, are purely assistive systems. The absence of an alarm is no guarantee that no danger exists.

If you do not agree to these terms and conditions, you should not use AvNav for navigating a vessel.
